The Florida Gators have a new №1 jersey for the 2020 season: Brenton Cox Jr.
Cox Jr. will join Kadarius Toney as the two Gators to wear the №1 jersey
The №1 jersey is entrenched in Florida Gators history as a number reserved for legends. Players such as Percy Harvin, Vernon Hargreaves, and Keiwan Ratliff have donned the number and gone down as the best of the best. In 2018, HC Dan Mullen stated that the 1 jersey was reserved for “ballers.” This year, Georgia transfer LB Brenton Cox Jr. has earned the 1 jersey for his freak athleticism in practice. Cox Jr. will join Kadarius Toney as the two Gators to wear the number this season.
This season will mark the first time the same player has worn the №1 jersey in back to back seasons since Vernon Hargreaves in 2014–2015. Toney returns in the 1 jersey after wearing 17 and 4 in his previous 2 seasons. Additionally, Cox Jr. will be the first LB to wear the №1 jersey since Jon Bostic in 2012.

A significant portion of the team has switched or gotten numbers in the single digits or teens, making this one of the most flashy rosters in a long time. Now its time to see if Brenton Cox Jr. can live up to the legacy of the №1 jersey as the Gators kick off their 2020 season at Ole Miss on September 26th.
