Quarterback Anthony Richardson now has big shoes to fill, as he has officially made the switch from #2 to #15. The number is one not only Gator Nation knows all too well, but all of college football: It belonged to Gator Great Tim Tebow.

“I know how much this number means to Gator Nation, especially at the Quarterback position, and I want to be a part of that legacy” Richardson told Gators Uniform Tracker in an exclusive interview. “I know the legacy and story behind it.”

The number change is one of many that have been brought to light this week during photoshoots for the program. But it was undoubtedly the most talked about as Jacob Copeland switched to #1 and the number was immediately open for Richardson.

“I heard that #15 was possibly open because Cope was changing his number so I thought that maybe it was my chance to try and grab it before someone else did” Richardson said.

But the number change had to be approved by Coach Mullen, as he has historically held players to a higher standard in jersey numbers, such as the prestigious #1 jersey.

“I talked to Coach Mullen two weeks ago about the number change and I could just sense there was a little hesitation about it because of [Tebow],” Richardson continued. “I know what standard has been set wearing that number so I want to be able to push myself to that level and try to elevate my game”

The number change is more than carrying on a legacy, though. Richardson said its an opportunity to be a leader.

“My relationship with Cope is constantly growing day by day, as well as some other teammates because I’m trying to step into more of a leadership role and gain everyone’s trust,” Richardson continued.

With his Redshirt Freshman season under his belt, Richardson looks to step into an important role behind presumed starter Emory Jones. And, as an Elite 11 finalist in high school, Richardson brings no shortage of talent to the Florida Gators. One thing is for sure, Gator Nation will be watching him, and his #15, very closely over the next few years.
