Florida Gators reveal throwback uniforms with retro orange helmet

Florida will wear their throwback uniforms, with retro orange helmets, against Vanderbilt

For the first time since 1978, the Gators will sport the interlocking UF logo on their helmet this Saturday against Vanderbilt for homecoming. The 2019 throwback uniforms make their 3rd consecutive appearance, but this time with orange helmets.

Retro orange helmets will pay homage to the 1969–1978 seasons when Florida wore the interlocking UF logo on orange helmets, pairing it with a variety of jerseys and pants. The UF logo was used on helmets during this time before the famous script Gators logo was introduced on the orange helmet as the primary look starting in 1979. Now, the Gators will return to the retro look.

Here’s a full breakdown of the retro orange helmets for this weekend:

• Orange helmet: Florida’s primary helmet color since 1979
• Interlocking UF logo: used from 1969–1978 on orange helmets. 1968 on white helmets.
• Script Gators bumper: used from the 80s-2005
• No stripe: The first time since the 2017 Swamp Green uniforms
• Gray facemask: the standard facemask color up until 1976

After back to back years of throwback uniforms, with the 2019 version sporting white helmets and the 2020 version sporting blue helmets, Florida is continuing their homecoming tradition of throwbacks but now with orange helmets. All-together, this year’s throwback uniform is a fauxback to 1971–1975 when Florida paired the UF helmets with their UCLA shoulder striped jerseys sporadically but with pants similar to the Gators pants of the 1990's and with a stripe on the helmet:

Florida was mildly successful during this era, going 33–24–1 across the 5 seasons.

GatorsEquipment later posted a now-deleted image of the throwback helmets with the standard blue/white/blue stripe, which would have been historically accurate for the 1969 season.

Saturday’s game is accompanied by a re-stock of throwback jerseys from Jordan as well as UF logo shirts in orange, blue, and white.
