Florida Gators reveal blue helmets
Florida will wear throwback uniforms, with blue helmets, against Missouri
The Gators will sport a new helmet this Saturday against Missouri in The Swamp. The 2019 throwback uniforms return — but with blue helmets; the first blue helmet for the Gators since 1965.
Retro blue helmets will pay homage to the 1963–1965 seasons when Florida wore blue helmets with QB Steve Spurrier rising to stardom. Only white and orange helmets have been worn since that time (excluding the 2017 Swamp Green alternate uniforms), with the famous script Gators orange helmet the primary look since 1979. Now, the Gators will have a blue helmet on hand, setting the program up for a new era of uniform possibilities.
Here is a full breakdown of the retro blue helmets for this weekend:
- Blue helmet: Florida’s helmet color from 1963–1965
- Circle F logo: used from 1964–1965 (also used in the 2019 throwbacks)
- White/Orange/White stripe: this is a stripe never before used in Florida’s history but is reminiscent of the spaced White/Orange/White stripe used sporadically from 1963–1965
- Script Gators bumper: used from the 80s-2005
- Gray facemask: the standard facemask color up until 1976
In a process that started in early Spring 2019, the blue helmets were a long-awaited piece to complete the throwback uniforms. The 2019 throwback uniforms, retro uniforms featuring white helmets with elements from the 1960’s, were originally supposed to have blue helmets. Merchandise, including blue t-shirts with the circle F logo, were sold in the bookstores with social graphics featuring “1965”, the last year the Gators wore blue helmets. However, the idea was pushed to the 2020 season. This opened the door for Athletic Director Scott Stricklin to follow through with his idea for a throwback uniform every homecoming game.
Florida turned to a helmet many fans are VERY familiar with when preparing the blue helmets; the 2017 Swamp Green helmets. That’s right, the 2017 Swamp Green helmets were reconditioned into the blue helmets the Gators will wear on Saturday.
The last time Florida wore the Blue/Blue/White combination? 55 years ago vs Miami. The combination has only been worn 7 times in history; 1963 vs Georgia Tech (L), Mississippi State (T), LSU (L), FSU (W), 1964 vs FSU (L), 1964 vs LSU (W), and 1965 vs Miami (L). The Gators will look to go 3–4–1 in the combination with a victory over Mizzou (which, coincidentally, is the last time the Gators wore blue helmets; the 1965-1966 Sugar Bowl).
This weekend’s game is accompanied by a release of vintage Fighting Albert gear from Nike. Hoodies, Sweatshirts, and Full-Zips are now available.
There you have it. Blue helmets are the culmination of nearly 1.5yrs of effort by Scott Stricklin and the equipment staff. Saturday, Gator Nation will be treated to a beautiful Blue/Blue/White combination that will shine under the lights. Now the only question remains, with blue helmets available, what’s next?
